Overview
Located on the banks of the Vltava River in the immediate vicinity of the Charles Bridge, the Bedřich Smetana Museum occupies a striking neo-Renaissance building that once served as the Old Town waterworks. Built in the early 1880s based on designs by architect Antonín Wiehl, the structure is immediately recognizable for its rich sgraffito decorations, which were crafted by prominent Czech painters Josef Ženíšek and Mikoláš Aleš. Since its public opening in 1936, the museum has functioned as the definitive home for the life and work of the famed Czech composer. Visitors can explore a permanent exhibition that documents the composer's influence from the 19th century through to the modern day, offering a intimate look at his personal archives and scores.
